If polls are to be believed (flashbacks from 2024), the GOP is falling all over themselves trying to distance themselves from trump or double down on trump hoping for the best. Something similar happened in 2024 with trump v. Harris where the polls predicted that Harris would win the election. Well, we all know that didn’t happen and that swing and a miss really put a dent in the trust people had with news outlets and pollsters. I remember waking up the next day and seeing my phone blown up with text messages and news alerts that orange man, somehow, won again for a 2nd term.
I submit this theory though. The country was doing pretty good going into 2024. The economy was strong, inflation was under control and lowering, and the average Joe wasn’t struggling too bad (at least that how it felt). Biden unfortunately was the victim of his own age in that one and only debate that essentially replaced him with Harris. She hit that ground hard and managed to rally a massive coalition behind her. The contrast between Harris rallies and trump rallies was so obvious to most and her momentum going into the election was strong. My own gut tells me that there was hinky stuff going on that helped push trump over the finish line. I give credit to Harris by just accepting it, conceding, and moving on.
Now, two years later, the country is not doing so well. Despite the economy being relatively resilient, inflation is not under control and going up with wars and prices being ridiculous. People had their safety nets ripped out from under them and have had to content with a rise in AI that is displacing a lot of entry level jobs. The job market is also on the decline with AI sucking revenue causing layoffs across multiple industries. I’m in a similar boat with my company as they have been shoving AI down our throats with an implication that those that don’t adapt will get left behind.
Where does that leave us for next week? I think there will be many Dem victories across the country, but not the “blue wave” that the news outlets are peddling. I’m not naive enough to fall for that a second time without being suspicious. I just want trump to lose all control of Congress so his stupid vanity projects just stop dead. People want affordable food, not a blue reflecting pool. People want their ACA coverage back, not a triumphal arch. People want to know that America is not on the decline as the rest of the world thinks it is. Going to be really interesting.
